Dual Language Program

Our unique dual language program is designed to ensure that all students graduate fully bi-lingual, bi-literate and bi-cultural, learning grade-level work in both English and in Spanish.

Our program is designed so that English Language Learners (ELL) hone their existing linguistic skills developed from their native language, while garnering proficiency in English. Additionally, our English-speaking students become bi-lingual, bi-literate, and bi-cultural, as a result of being exposed to our culturally-relevant curriculum. In the K-2nd grades, all content is taught 50% in English and 50% in Spanish. In the 3rd-4th grades, English is used for ELA (English Language Arts), Spanish is utilized for the Science content, and all other instruction follows the 50% English and 50% Spanish model. Our Spanish instruction follows the same pacing calendar as social studies and science instruction so that vocabulary learned in Spanish can be integrated with units of study in social studies and science.

Culture of Inclusion

Students enjoy an academically stimulating environment that fosters inclusion and acceptance. This is demonstrated in the use of our inclusion model, which allows teachers to serve the needs of all students regardless of whether they are classified as in need of Special Education. At our school, true inclusion of special education students means those students receive services in the general classroom. Within a general education classroom, these students receive therapy as well as classwork related to their adapted curriculum, as needed.

Culture of Community

At Heketi, uplifting and maintaining our community is a major priority. The word “community” is not simply in our name – it’s in everything that we do! Below are just a few examples of how we engage our families and community throughout the school year.
